ROUND ROCK – In a battle of ‘Eagles’, the Prosper Eagles soared higher tonight in their 8-0 victory over the Georgetown Eagles in the 5A State Championship Game at Dell Diamond. From the start, Prosper looked to have a calmness and control that was not as evident from their opponent. In front of a record crowd for UIL baseball (8,126), Prosper made it look easy.
Prosper pitcher, Kylor Morris, faced 25 batters in 7 innings, fanning 5 and getting 12 infield ground outs in route to a 1 hit shutout and an MVP performance. The only hit for Georgetown came on a 5th inning leadoff single by Ty Markee. Markee would be quickly erased on a fielder’s choice by the following hitter, Aiden Kelleher. Morris frustrated Georgetown hitters, only allowing 3 balls to leave the infield grass, including the base hit by Markee.
The Prosper offense came alive in the 2nd, getting 6 runs on 3 hits, 2 hit-by-pitch, a catcher’s interference, a wild pitch, and an error. Anthony Bernardez led off the 2nd with a hit-by-pitch and became the first run in the inning, followed by Cam Wood, Josh Walker, Chad Hardy, Easton Murrell, Kylor Morris, and Matthew Gonzalez. Bernardez would return to the plate in the 2nd and get a single before Wood flew out to center field to end the inning. Prosper would tack on 2 more in the 3rd on 4 hits by Nolan Pratt, Chad Hardy, Steele Walker, and Kylor Morris.
Overall, Prosper demonstrated a dominance unmatched to this point in the State Tournament by any team in any classification and did so in front of a record crowd. Congratulations to Prosper, their players, fans and to Coach Carpenter. Their desire and drive was obvious throughout the season and their title well deserved.
Congratulations to Georgetown and Coach Foster. They represented their town, fans, and region in such a way that they deserve to hold their heads high.
