4A State Semifinal Game 2: West Orange-Stark 8 El Campo 0

Posted on:

It was the Anderson brother show in the 2nd game of the 4A Semifinal matchup at Disch-Falk field. Together, Aidan and Grant Anderson led the West Orange-Stark Mustangs to an 8-0 win over El Campo to set up a 4A Championship finale between West Orange-Stark and Argyle Thursday evening.

Aidan shut down the El Campo Ricebirds with a complete game shut out, giving up only 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 11. Anderson allowed only a single in the 3rd and a walk in the 4th but El Campo was not able to move the baserunner over in either inning. He was especially impressive in striking out the side in the bottom of the 7th. 10 of the 11 strike outs were swinging strikeouts.

While Aidan was dominant on the mound, twin brother Grant was equally impressive at the plate. Grant hit a two out RBI triple in a 4 run 5th inning and then broke the game open with a bases loaded double that scored all three runners. He ended with 4 RBIs in the game. Aidan was not bad at the plate either going 1-3 with a walk, getting an RBI, with courtesy runner Aaron Blagburn scoring 2 runs.

West Orange-Stark also had some good defense play. SS Payton Robertson made several good plays with 5 assists and RF Chase Rutledge made a diving catch on the foul line off of a ball that would have been extra bases if fair.

CF and leadoff hitter Grant Lapoint-Teate was injured in the 5th inning of the game sliding into 2nd Base. Status was unknown at the end of the game but he had a broken femur during football season. Coach Shea Landry felt that the injury was a bruise but they were going to get it checked out later.

El Campo, the Region 4 champions, ended their season with a very respectable 29-7 record.

4A State Semifinal: Argyle 9 Abilene Wylie 4

Posted on:

For the second straight year, the Argyle Eagles will play in the 4A state championship.  After falling to College Station in dramatic fashion just a year ago, the Eagles will now have their shot at a championship on Thursday evening.

The first few innings of the ballgame saw both pitchers hold each team down.  That was until the Wylie Bulldogs put the pressure on in the bottom half of the third inning with a 3-spot.

It all started with a Payton Stokes lead-off single.  Stokes and Hedge later scored on a Lane Bourland single to centerfield to give Wylie the 1-0 advantage.  An error would eventually allow a third run to come in and give the Bulldogs a somewhat comfortable lead through 3 innings of play.

After falling behind, Argyle was able to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 4th.  Danny Linahan got the Eagles on the board in the inning with a ground out to second base, scoring Cutter McDonald.  However, with two outs the Eagles did not stop there as rocket over the center fielder’s head scored Rylan King.

After quickly retiring Wylie in the bottom half of the 4th, Argyle put the game out of reach in the 5th with 7 runs.  McDonald (2 RBI double), Balch (1 RBI double), Linaham (1 RBI single), Boyd (2 RBI single), and Green (RBI groundout) all helped pitch in to give the Eagles a commanding lead.

That lead was all that Rixey Boyd would need as he held the Bulldogs at bay the rest of the game until giving up 1 lone run in the 7th.  Boyd tossed all 7 innings, giving up 9 hits, 3 earned runs, 1 base on balls, and 4 strikeouts.

Game 2 would see Crawford (25-6) take on Harleton (28-2). Both pitchers kept the game under control until a catchers interference call in the top of 4 negated a 6-4-3 double play. Not to be left out of the hitting game, Crawford strung together 4 hits in the top of the 5th that scored 3 runs on 1 error by Harleton. At the end of 5 it was Crawford 4 and Harleton 3.

Harleton held Crawford to 1 base runner on a E5 in the top of the 6th. After a leadoff walk, Braden Murphy would come in to pitch for Crawford. He then walked Will Davis and Josh Ready. With bases loaded, Murphy got the critical strikeout, preserving the 4-3 lead.
