INTERVIEW
Colton, when did you start playing baseball?
I actually started playing baseball at the ripe age of 3 years old.
When did you become aware that you had a talent for playing baseball?
When I was playing T-Ball, I was the only kid who could catch a fly ball. People got excited about that. My dad saw my talent. My mom saw it. And baseball just became a thing for me after that.
Who is someone who encouraged, motivated or inspired you in your baseball journey?
My Grandpa was my biggest cheerleader. He was right there by me. Always got me the equipment I needed. He helped raise me. And my dad. He’s from an athletic family and he passed that on to me. And he was there for me and gave me all the resources I needed to play baseball.
Tough series with Wall in the State Semifinals last year. Talk about that series.
We had a lot of high hopes going into that series. We beat them my freshman year in the State Championship. That was an amazing feeling and we wanted to do it again. Game 1 we got punched in the mouth. We didn’t execute well. So we came into Game 2 with a sour taste in our mouth. We came ready to play. We were energized and we tied the series. But then they had a big first inning in Game 3 and we couldn’t come back. I felt like we were the better team but there were just times we didn’t execute when we needed to. And at the end of the day that opened the door for them to win. It was a hard fought 3 game series.
Talk about this year’s team.
We are very tight. A lot of us have been part of the main core. We’ve been in off-season together. We’ve lifted a lot of weights and we have spent time together. We have very good chemistry and I think that is going to help us.
What will it take for you guys to make another long playoff run?
It’s going to take grit. A lot of hard work. Nothing will be handed to us. A lot of teams will be aiming for us. So day in and day out we need to work hard. Go to practice, go to the weight room. Approach scrimmages the same as we would approach a playoff game because if you do that then you will be able to win in those big situations.
What do you think your role will look like this year?
Probably the same role I had last year. Being a role model. Being a leader out on the field. We have a great group of seniors this year. We are the last of the 23 State Championship Team. As seniors, we need to perform. We have a lot of experience but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will automatically happen. We need to step it up. Be better than we were last year. Going out there and performing will lead this team.
When you finish your season this year how do you hope you will be remembered?
That I was a high-intensity guy who always brought the energy and positivity on the ball field and at practice. A hard-worker. Someone who never wanted to be beaten. A good teammate. Someone that would have your back. And someone who was a winner.
What do you like about UT-Tyler?
They went to the Division 2 College World Series last year. They had over 50 wins. They won the D3 Championship in 2018 and then moved up. And now they are playing really well at the D2 level. When I went out and visited I loved the coaches, I loved the campus. When I went out there all of the team were working. It was their off day but they were still working and I loved that. I love how they play and I definitely think I have a shot to do good things there.
