INTERVIEW
Talk to me about being in the State Championship Game last year?
Being there was awesome. The whole atmosphere of being in the State Championship Game. Arriving at Dell Diamond to play is something you dream about. Missing out on it the last two years crushed out dreams. But getting there, the excitement of the bus ride. It just felt awesome seeing the whole field and then getting to be on the field. I think a lot of us used a little too much energy at the start of the game. We were hyped. We will be ready for that when we go back this year. It was an awesome game. Props to Calallen. They are a great team. It was awesome to battle it out with them.
What do you like about this year’s team?
We pretty much have everybody back. We’re a senior heavy team and some of us have been starting since our freshman year. It’s awesome to see the growth though out freshman year all the way up to senior year. We are senior heavy and we’re just going to be coaching up the younger kids coming up. And I think we have a real shot to see Calallen in it again this year.
What will be some your biggest challenges this year getting back to the championship game?
I think it is just not playing down to teams with lesser talent. I think we need to play the way we should every game no matter what. It doesn’t matter if we are playing the best team in the world or the worst team, we need to treat it like they are the best team. And so I think if we play like that and we stay level headed with the guys we have on this team, we can make it back.
What will your role look like this year?
Just trying to be a leader. I remember getting coached from all the seniors when we were younger and now we are the seniors. So it’s our turn to become the leaders for the younger kids. The leader role is just uplifting the locker room, making sure nobody hates coming to baseball practice. We want everybody on this team to enjoy coming out to baseball practice every single day. Just keeping a good mojo throughout the locker room and throughout the field.
Why Arkansas?
Funny story. Went to a little kids camp in Fayetteville when I was in 8th grade, wanted to see the campus and see everything going on there. They turned an offer. I was just playing baseball and it just happened. It was pretty surreal and nobody believed me when I got back to school. I’ve always wanted to go to Arkansas. They’ve always been a top program. Dave Van Horn is a great coach. I love watching them play. And I love their facilities. One of the best in the country. Getting to meet all the coaches, getting to see everything. I was really pumped then and I’m still excited about it.
