INTERVIEW

Conner, when did you realize you had a gift for playing baseball?

I would say the summer when I was 15. Sophomore year going into junior year. I got contacted by USA Prime Travel Baseball team and then just balled out all summer. After that summer, a bunch of colleges contacted me and I was excited about that. And then during my junior season of high school, I kind of had some doubts, like maybe I’m a little overrated. But then I started hitting like crazy. Doubles, Triples, Home Runs. Right Center, Left Center. And I was like, no, I’m supposed to be here. Since then I’ve had no doubt that this is my career pathYou guys made a good run in the playoffs last year.

What went well for you guys last year?

Moving down to 5A helped out a lot. We moved out of that brutal 26-6A district. We had a good group of seniors. There were all friends and then the rest of us figured out how to work as a unit. How to talk with each other, how to overcome adversity, and things like that. We swept Eastview, then Victoria East and then we beat Lake Creek. It was an awesome moment to come together as a team and be so successful.

Was this successful run in the playoffs a little surprising?

I would say that this type of run was not expected. The baseball program hasn’t been that great lately. Coach Matthews has built the program to what it is now and has now set the tone of a successful culture.

How does this year’s Anderson team look?

I think it looks good. I’ll be back as our shortstop. Our catcher is a Wharton County JC commit. And then we got a good transfer from Hyde Park, Hank Rippy who is a UT commit. Lee Trevino is back. He was just clutch in the playoffs and in big key moments

What are your challenges for this year?
Pitching. Our lineup looks good. Our defense looks good. We just have to figure out our pitching. Hopefully we have some young guys who step up and help us out.

What do you like about this year’s team?

I really like how we get along as a team. Everybody just kind of clecks. There is a lot of team chemistry, a lot of joking around. Overall, it’s just a good overall community. You have people to count on and lean on.

How do your see your role on this year’s team?

I would say that my role hasn’t changed much. I have been a leader. I have been a shortstop and commanded the field. I talk to my pitchers when they are struggling. I liked talking to guys in practice, especially helping the younger guys. I don’t think my role will any different than last year – Play center field, be our lead off, like a good gritty guy to have.

Why UT?

Well, they a change in office and their new head coach was previously a hitting coach. And I love that because most of the college baseball head coaches are either ex pitching guys or they just started off as a head coach.
