2A Division II State Championship Game

Collinsville v Overton

This year’s trip to Round Rock felt a little different.  With no State Semi-finals at Dell Diamond, we got to jump right into the Championship game.  Collinsville is no stranger to the stage having been here the last two years.  Overton has not been to the State tournament since 2011.  Overton struggled in the first inning, allowing the entire Collinsville up to bat. After 3 errors and 2 hits, Collinsville took a 4-0 lead at the top of the first.  Oddly, Collinsville would start the bottom of the 1st with a throwing error by the shortstop followed by two hit batters to load the bases before Garrett Trevino was able to strike out a batter and then get an inning ending double play.

Overton settled down in the top of the second despite allowing the leadoff batter to reach on a hit by pitch.  He was promptly thrown out by catcher Bryce Still.  Two quick outs later, the Mustangs got to bat again.  Landon Hill led off with a single to left.  He was moved over to second by Bryce Still on a sacrifice bunt. A throwing error moves runners to the corner, but Trevino was able to escape any damage on another inning ending double play.

In the third, Collinsville had runners on the corners but couldn’t push a run across. A two out double by Brody Brown and an intentional walk of Rylan Holleman resulted in the only base runners Overton could get on in the bottom of the third. Landon Hill came in to pitch for the Mustangs, it was a quick three up – three down inning for him.  Overton couldn’t score in the bottom of the fourth.  Despite a leadoff walk in the top of 5, Hill only faced three batters. Casen Schafer came in to pitch for Collinsville and would only face 3 batters in the bottom of the 5th.

Thanks to a runner’s interference call, Hill continued to just face 3 batters in an inning as would Casen Schafer for the Pirates in the bottom of the 6th.  Collinsville bats came out hot in the top of the 7th.  Coupled with 3 walks and a hit by pitch, the Pirates quickly added four insurance runs before the first out was recorded.  They would add four more before the top of the 7th was over.  Overton could not mount a comeback.  Collinsville won the first Division II 2A State Baseball Championship.
