2A State Semi Final Woden v Muenster

Senior Stetson McGrew took the mound for Muenster and would get three quick fly balls in the Top of the first for Muenster.  Woden Senior Drew Shifflet would have a first batter jitter as he hit Clay Stevens on a pitch that didn’t break.  After he settled in, it would be a quick inning.  The game’s first hit came with one out in the top of 2 as Reid Taylor drove a pitch up the middle for a single.  But a strike them out throw them out would quickly dispatch Taylor and end the Woden top half of the second.

Drew Shifflet added to his strikeout totals with 3 more in the bottom of the second.  As we head to the top of the 3rd, Woden would get a single by Jalen Amidon, but never threaten.  Muenster would get a runner to 3rd in the bottom of the third.  An outstanding pick by first baseman Luke Alvis would end the inning.  Muenster’s Parker McGrew wouldn’t be outdone on outstanding plays in the Top of the fourth.  Leaving his feet, he recorded the final out of the inning.  Saving a run from possibly scoring from first.  In the bottom of the 4th, Muenster would go down in order on a flyout to center, a strikeout looking and a groundout to second.

Stetson McGrew continue to look strong in the 5th.  It started with a Willie Mays over the shoulder catch by Carson Trubenbach in center field and ended with 2 backwards Ks.  In the bottom of the 5th, second baseman Jalen Amidon would cover a lot of turf for the first out. But a walk by Danny Luttmer and a ground rule double by Clay Stevens put runners on second and third.  Kagen Dangelmayr put one in the deep hole at short.  Despite a diving stop by Woden shortstop Ethan Jacobs, the throw to first was off line.  Muenster would plate 2 runs.  Woden managed a walk in the top of the 6th but that was all.  Shifflet continued to throw strikes and sat down the bottom of the 6th with three more strikeouts.

Woden would be down to its final 3 outs if they didn’t score two in the top of the 7th.   They would get a baserunner on when Khristain Goree was hit by a pitch.  He wouldn’t score.  The game ended on a groundout to second base setting up a repeat of the 2017 State Championship game.  Muenster will face Dallardsville Big Sandy at noon on Thursday.
