Game Grade 5A Team of the Week
Lindale Eages – the Eagles went 4-1 in the Rose City Classic in Tyler with statement wins over the 5A #1 and #2 teams. On Friday, the Eagles defeated #2 Forney by a score of 10-3 and followed that up with a 6-0 win over #1 Amarillo on Saturday. Lindale’s other wins came over Sulphur Springs (9-6) and Waxahachie (4-1). Their only loss was to 6A Tyler Lee by a score of 3-0.
Runner-up
Mission Veterans – the Patriots started out the season 5-0 and posted wins against Laredo Martin (11-7), PSJA Memorial (15-3), Mercedes (8-0), San Antonio Edison (11-3) and Brownsville Lopez (8-7). By my early records, Mission Vets appears to be the only team with a 5-0 record after week 1 in class 5A.
Honorable Mention
Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway – the Warriors posted a .500 winning percentage by going 3-3 last week at the Border Olympics, but how they got that third win was truly remarkable. Trailing 6A #2, Rockwall, 16-6 going in to the bottom of the 7th, Tuloso-Midway scored 13 runs, capped off by a walk-off grand slam from junior, Darren Mourer, to beat the Yellowjackets 19-16.
