INTERVIEW
When did you realize you were a talented baseball player?
I was around 10 or 11 when I knew I was pretty good at baseball. Everyone started talking about my pitching and I remember thinking that I was pretty good at this. My dad played football at Tech and so I played both baseball and football growing up. This year I didn’t play football so that I could be dedicated to baseball in the fall and have the best spring possible.
Talk about the ’25 Lake Travis baseball team. You guys made it to the State Semifinals.
Yes sir. It was a great season. I’ve never felt so much like a brotherhood as last year. Our team jelled so well together. We may not have been the most talented team out there but we knew we were going to go out there and compete our butts off and we were going to end up winning no matter what.
Was last year’s success unexpected?
In a way, yes. Especially after losing Leon and some of the big name guys from the season before. We had a lot of guys coming up that were unproven. We just went out and proved ourselves and showed the state that Lake Travis was still here to stay.
Was there a point last year when you guys realized that you were a good team?
Right after tournament season. We struggled some in the tournaments. But as soon as we started district, we started rolling, We just kept winning and rolling right into the playoffs. We had some big innings in the first two rounds and we knew we were hot. Like it is our time and we have a real shot at this thing.
What do you like about this year’s Lake Travis team?
I love that we have a bunch of players returning. We have experience on this year’s team. Players who how to perform in the big moments. And then the young guys are really stepping up this year, looking for a bigger role on the team. Everyone is competing their butts off, trying to get better, to get back to the state semifinals and make it to the championship and win it.
What do you think are the challenges for Lake Travis this year?
I think it’s not buying into the hype. Just play our game no matter who’s on the other side. We just need to be focused and be sound in our game. Our focus and our goal is to win the state championship. So we want to put all our efforts and work towards that goal.
How do you see your role on this team?
I just see myself as the workhorse ace that I was last year. Going to go compete 5 to 7 innings, try to finish the games. But I also want to be the leader to the guys. Leading by example. Not like a drill sergeant. But by example. Like doing the right things on and off the field. Make sure I get the guys better and push them to be their best selves.
Why UT?
My relationship with the coaches, especially Coach Weiner, the pitching coach. You saw what he did with the program last year. The pitching staff was middle of the row the year before and Coach Weiner took them and transformed them into the best pitching staff in the SEC. I know he can develop talent and he can develop guys. He pushes guys to be better is just huge. And the fact that it’s 25 minutes away from house doesn’t hurt. Being close to the family is nice.
