6A Division I State Championship

Waco Midway continued their underdog season with a 6-2 win over Atascocita to capture the 6A Division I State Championship. Their path to the Championship game went through Rockwall Heath, a hot Klein Cain team and a very talented Prosper team. But today they got the biggest win of the season by putting together an offensive barrage of 10 hits to go with a gutsy relief appearance.

Midway got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. With Garrent Wiethorn and Dru Ohmsted on 2nd and 3rd, Tyler Seith singled to left field and scored both runners. Canyon Martin followed up an double to left center field that scored Seith. Midway took the early 3-0 lead.

Atascocita responded with a couple of runs in the top of the second. Ty Higginbotham singled and Jayden Hernandez walked. Kaleb Thomas followed with a double that scored courtesy runner Jackson Wooten. Hernandez then scored on a Nick Dykes ground out to shortstop as Atascocita cut the Midway lead to 3-2.

Midway picked up another run in the bottom of the 3rd. With one out, Martin walked and then stole second. He moved to third on a ground ball out. Martin then scored on a wild pitch increasing Midway’s lead to 4-2.

The score stayed 4-2 until the bottom of the 6th. Canyon Martin led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. After a ground out, Jackson Goldstritch singled off the pitcher’s glove to score Martin. A couple of batters later, TJ Woodson singles to score Goldstritch and Midway took a 6-2 lead into the 7th.

Closer Brody Potts went out for his 4th inning of relief to save the victory. He started the inning with a strike out and a pop out. He then gave up a single and a walk but got the ground ball out to secure the victory and the Midway State Championship. He finished the game pitching 4.2 innings giving up no runs on 3 hits with 4 Ks and 2 BBs. He was named the championship game MVP.

“Playing from Little League to High School, the highest point you can get is a state championship. Playing with the best team you could possibly have. I went out there today to play the game that I love and play the way I always do. For me its always a 0-0 game when I go in to pitch. I just did my job and it got us a win.”

Midway Head Coach Eddie Cornblum commented. “I couldn’t be more happy right now. I didn’t know if I would ever know what this would feel like. It’s pretty awesome. This team is tough. They don’t ever quit. They understand preparation. They can really defend and they just know how to win.”
