Colleyville Heritage banged out a 5A state tournament record 18 hits as they run-ruled Georgetown 14-2 to claim the 2019 5A State Championship. This was the first baseball state championship for Colleyville Heritage.
Georgetown scored 2 runs in the first inning when Noah Thompson singled with the bases loaded, scoring Wyatt Childress and Cole Posey take the early lead in the game. But in the top of the 2nd inning, Colleyville Heritage loaded the bases with two outs with Koetting, the #9 batter in the lineup, coming up to bat. Koetting drew a 2-1 count and then drove a Brinley inside fastball over the head of the left fielder to clear the bases and give Colleyville Heritage their first lead.
βIt is my job to put the ball in play and try to get us back to the top of the lineup,β Koetting explained. βI knew he was going to throw a fastball in to try and overpower me. It was a great feeling to hit the ball so well and I knew this could be a turning point in the game.β
Koetting went on to score on a Logan Britt single and Colleyville Heritage took a 4-2 lead.
In the fourth inning, Colleyville Heritage blew the game open. Colleyville had 5 singles and a Chandler Freeman triple to score 6 runs and extend their lead to 10-2. Colleyville also added a run in the 5th on a Nicolas Balsano RBI double and scored 3 runs in the 6th on a Logan Britt bases loaded triple. Britt finished with 5 RBIs on the day.
Georgetown sent out 5 pitchers during the game but could not find anyone to cool down the Colleyville Heritage bats. Starter Jack Brinley was chased out in the 3rd inning and took the first loss of the season for him.
Aidan Caputi was the winning pitcher for Colleyville Heritage. He pitched 4 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 4 batters. He finished the season 10-0. Freeman came in to pitch the last 2 innings giving up only 1 hit and no runs.
