Covenant Christian Gets 5-1 Win over Dallas Christian, Advances To Division 3 State Championship

Covenant Christian got 5 runs from their offense and Carter Humphrey held Dallas Christian to just one run as the Cougars got the 5-1 win over Dallas Christian in the TAPPS Division 3 State Semifinal game. Covenant Christian will now meet the winner of the Pasadena First Baptist and St. Francis Episcopal Semifinal Game for the Division 3 State Championship.

Covenant Christian put a run on the board in the top of the 1st. Chase Humphrey led off with a single and stole second. Humphrey advanced to 3B on a wild pitch and then scored on Chance Dennis groundout as Covenant Christian took the early 1-0 lead.

Dallas Christian got a run of their own in the 2nd inning. Beau Blair and and Luke Barton led off the inning with consecutive singles. With one out, Cooper Johnson singled to centerfield and Blair scored to tie the game 1-1.

Covenant Christian picked up another run in the top of the 4th thanks to some free passes. After a fly out, Covenant Christian drew 3 straight walks to load the bases. After a caught stealing, Cameron Jordan had an infield single to load the bases again. Dane Coley walked, scoring Asher Hoffman and Covenant Christian was back in the lead 2-1.

Covenant Christian added to their lead in the top of the 5th. Jonah Williamson reached based on an error and scored on a Dennis triple. Dennis then scored on a passed ball and Covenant Christian increased their lead to 4-1. They added another run in the top of the 6th with a Humphrey RBI single to make it a 5-1 game.

While Covenant Christian was adding runs, starting pitcher Carter Humphrey was getting into a groove. After allowing 3 hits and a run in the 2nd inning, he gave up only one hit the rest of the way. Covenant Christian took the 5-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th. Humphrey got a strikeout, a ground out and another strikeout to end the game. He gave up only 4 hits and one walk, striking out 6 and allowing one run. He also was 2-3 at the plate with a run and an rbi. He was named the THSB Semifinal Game MVP.

“We got a run on the board and they got one back,” Humphrey explained.  “But we didn’t let if affect us.  We got back on defense and got into it.  I felt good, loose and confident.  I knew I wanted to give it my all so we could go play for a state championship.”

“Carter was the heartbeart of the team,” Head Coach Michael Boughton added.  “He’s been a competitor all year.  He been there, done that.  So this wasn’t a big game for him.  We played really good defense today and I was super proud of them.”
