A couple of weeks ago, the El Paso Franklin Cougars were playing in a tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. They made it to the championship game and didn’t play Saturday until late so they decided to take in one of the Major League Baseball Spring Training games there in Phoenix. Little did they know that they attended one of the featured games of the Will Ferrell Spring Training Tour. He was the starting shortstop for the Oakland’s A’s that day.
During this tour, actor Will Ferrel played all 10 positions — the nine defensive positons plus DH — with 10 different MLB teams in five spring training games across Arizona. But it was not just a publicity stunt, it was for a good cause. The stunt — if you want to call it that — is part of Ferrell’s new project with Funny Or Die, HBO and the MLB to honor baseball legend Bert “Campy” Campaneris and raise funds for organizations fighting cancer. Campaneris, who famously played all nine positions for the Kansas City Athletics on Sept. 8, 1965, joined Ferrell in some of the games.
The players also got to meet and briefly visit with ESPN broadcaster and former MLB player Sean Casey
