Flower Mound took advantage of 2 walks, 2 errors and a wild pitch to start the game with a 4-0 lead and held on to beat the 6A #1 Cy Woods team 6-3. With the victory, Flower Mound moves to the 6A State Championship Game to played at 4 PM on Saturday. They will play the winner of the Austin Westlake/Pearland State Semifinal.

The first inning was a disastrous one for Cy Woods and Flower Mound made the most of it. Sam Erickson started the inning off drawing a walk. Ryder McDaniel followed with a nice bunt but Cy Woods’ starting pitcher Mason Green threw the ball wide to 1B allowing Erickson to advance to 3rd and McDaniel to 2nd.

A wild pitch scored Erickson and moved McDaniel to 3rd. Josh Glaser singled on a hard hit ball to 3B that bounced off Farris’ leg, allowing McDaniel to score from 3rd. Glaser later advanced to 3rd on a throwing error to 2nd and scored on Cole Ridenour’s ground out. Zane Becker also scored on a fielder’s choice and Flower Mound was quickly up 4-0.

Chase Morgan came in to relieve for Cy Woods in the first inning and held Flower Mound at bay for 3 innings. Flower Mound picked up another run in the 5th on a Cole Ridenour RBI single, his second RBI of the day, to give Flower Mound a 5-0 lead.

Flower Mound starting pitcher Zach James, who was a last minute replacement for scheduled start Jacob Gholston, was effective with the tough Cy Woods’ hitters. He held them scoreless for six of the seven innings. Cy Woods did get to James for three runs in the 5th.

Pinch hitter Michael Minchich got things started for Cy Woods in the 5th with a leadoff double. Sam Myers followed up with a double of his own down the right field line scoring Minchich and getting Cy Woods on the board for the first time. Tristan Russell had a sacrifice fly that scored Myers and McClane Helton had an RBI single that scored Brady Sullivan. That cut Flower Mound’s lead to 5-3.

But James got back in the groove after that inning allowing only one baserunner on 1 single to shut down Cy Woods’ offense. Flower Mound picked up another run in the 7th on an Adrian Rodriguez RBI single which set the final score at 6-3 in favor of Flower Mound.

Zach James was named the THSB 6A State Semifinal MVP. He pitched all 7 innings, gave up 8 hits and 3 runs, with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. He was the winning pitcher and improved his record to 10-2 on the year.
