Georgetown Explodes For 6 Runs in the 5th, Defeats Pioneer 8-2

The Georgetown Eagle bats woke up in the 5th inning, scoring 6 runs on 7 hits, leading them to an 8-2 victory over the Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks in the 2nd 5A State Semifinal Game. Georgetown will meet Colleyville Heritage in the 5A State Championship Game on Saturday.

Pioneer started the scoring in the 1st as the first three Pioneer batters got on base. Juan Rivera walked to open the game and went to 3rd on a Pedro Tovias single. Starting Pitcher Jacob Rosales then laced a single into left field to put Pioneer on the board.

The scored stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the 2nd when Sr Zack Whittenton, the THSB Player of the Game, hit a Sacrifice Fly to right field scoring Wesley Dixon. The Eagles picked up another run in the bottom of the 4th when Noah Thompson singled, stole second, took 3rd on a wild pitch and stole home when he got caught in a rundown and got away and scored.

But it was the bottom of the 5th when things exploded for Georgetown. Whittenton led things off with a double and was sacrificed over to 3rd. With the top of the lineup up, Georgetown had 4 consecutive hits, 2 on base by errors, a walk, and two more singles including a 2 RBI single by Whittenton, his second hit of the inning. Georgetown scored 6 runs on 7 hits in the inning.

“I think we were a little tight and caught up in the moment early on,” Whittenton explained.  “We were reminded that this just a game like all the others.  We just settled down and started hitting the ball.”

After the big inning, Georgetown held on, giving up one more run to Pioneer before closing the game with an 8-2 victory.

Braxton Pearson picked up the win for the Eagles on the mound after coming in for starter Grant Wood in 3rd inning. Pearson pitched 3.1 innings and did not allow a hit, striking out 4 while only walking one.

The 5A State Championship will be held at Dell Diamond on Saturday at Noon.
