INTERVIEW

Growing up in a baseball family, what are some of your earliest memories of baseball?

I remember about 7 or 8 years old when my dad was with the Texas Rangers, being in the dugout, being a bat boy, being around players like Josh Hamilton, Elvis Andrus.  So growing up with my dad being in the Rangers’ organization was really cool.  And then I remember when my dad was an assistant at Oklahoma State, being at those games and then travelling to Omaha.  Being around college guys and learning baseball from that perspective was really cool.

Do you remember when you decided you were going to be a baseball player?

Since birth it was always like “you are going to play baseball” because my dad coached and my older brother played.  I knew from when I was young that baseball was my sport.

Last year’s state championship game…you guys outhit Central Catholic 8-2 but still lost.  Talk about that game from your perspective.

We played hard.  Like you said, we outhit them 8-2.  Our pitching staff did great but we couldn’t come up with that big hit.  We pitched 4-5 arms in the Semifinals extra inning game so we had to go deep into our pitching.  It was a competitive game but we just couldn’t get that big hit.  They got two big hits and that’s what beat us.  But it was a good game, a fun game.  We just didn’t come out with the win.

Talk about this year’s team.

We have a lot of hitters back.  We lost a couple of quality arms so that’s going to be tough.  But I think we have guys who have come in that are going to help us.  Defensively, we are about the same.  We return our catcher.  And hitting wise I think we will be fine.  We have good team chemistry.  We have a good senior group that will be able to lead and help develop some of the younger guys.  And the pitching…we always do good there and I think we will be good on pitching this year as well.

What do you think it will take to get back to the championship game?

Playing winning baseball will be the key to this year.  Discipline will be important.  If we score more runs than them, we will make it back.  Good team chemistry is important.  And we have to play one pitch at a time and that will lead to success.

How do you see your role on this team?

I like to be a team player.  I like to be a leader.  I will pitch and play 1st Base.  I have experience and should be able to lead well.  Pitch well, Play first base well. Be a big bat in the lineup.  Lead by example on the field.

Talk about your week at the Area Code Games.  You had a good week and were named All-Tournament.

It was fun.  I hit well.  I had one of the best weeks I’ve ever had in my baseball career.  I went 6-8 with two walks.  I felt really good at the plate playing against some of the best talent in the nation.  It was an awesome week and it felt good to perform so well out at the Area Code games.

Why Texas A&M?

It felt like family.  The coaching staff is great.  The first phone call I had with them felt like they cared about me.   They have a lot of good hitting coaches on that staff and I’m excited about that. I’m pumped to be an Aggie and I’m excited about what the future holds.
