San Perlita Athletics Autism Awareness Week

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person’s ability to communicate, and interact with others.  This past week San Perlita Baseball and Softball took a moment to raise awareness of autism and honor some young men and women from their community who have Austism.  Students at San Perlita ISD who have autism threw out the first pitch at the baseball and softball games and had a chance to run the bases.  According to the Autism Society, early detection can change lives.  Here are some signs to look for in the children in your life:.

  • Lack of or delay in spoken language
  • Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)
  • Little or no eye contact
  • Lack of interest in peer relationships
  • Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play
  • Persistent fixation on parts of objects

Thank you San Perlita Athletics for doing your part to raise awareness of Autism.
