ROUND ROCK — The New Home Leopards captured the UIL Class 2A Division I State Championship on Thursday, defeating Iola 7-2 at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
The championship matchup featured two outstanding clubs, with New Home entering the title game at 29-8 and making its sixth appearance in a state championship game, while Iola, 26-4, was making the program’s first-ever appearance on Texas high school baseball’s biggest stage. The game began under unusual conditions, with sunshine breaking through and a misty rain as the two teams took the field.
The contest featured a showdown of ace pitchers. Iola handed the ball to senior Brody Vaughn, who entered the game with a perfect 16-0 record, while New Home countered with Tucker Cotton, who brought an 8-1 mark into the championship game.
Iola struck first in the opening inning. Ryan Roubion put pressure on the New Home defense, and Brek Roberts crossed the plate when Colin Fowler was caught stealing third base, giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.
New Home wasted little time responding. The Leopards erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Bransen Beckham delivered the biggest blow of the frame, lining a two-run double to drive in Tucker Cotton and Hunter Burrell. Jair Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly, and Brock Bessire added an RBI single as New Home seized control with a five-run outburst.
The Leopards added two more runs in the second inning. Beckham continued his stellar afternoon with another RBI hit, helping New Home extend the advantage to 7-1.
Iola showed its resilience in the third inning when Eddie Longoria scored on an RBI single by Fowler, cutting the deficit to 7-2. However, that would be the Bulldogs’ final run of the day.
Cotton settled in after the first inning and kept Iola’s offense in check, while the New Home defense played flawless baseball behind him. The Leopards finished the game without committing an error, while Iola was charged with three miscues.
After Cotton’s strong outing, Avin Madrid came on in relief and slammed the door. Madrid tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out one batter to earn the save and preserve the championship victory.
Beckham led the offensive attack for New Home, driving in three runs with a pair of clutch hits. Bessire added an RBI, while Johnson contributed a sacrifice fly and run batted in as the Leopards capitalized on their opportunities throughout the early innings.
New Home finished with seven runs on seven hits and played error-free baseball. Iola collected four hits and showed the fight that carried the Bulldogs to their historic first state championship appearance, but the Leopards’ explosive start proved too much to overcome.
For New Home, the victory adds another chapter to the program’s rich baseball tradition and delivers the Class 2A Division I State Championship trophy back to West Texas. For Iola, the season ends with a 26-4 record and the most successful postseason run in school history, highlighted by the program’s first trip to a state championship game.
