Alpha Omega started the game by scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st. Austin McCaffety had a lead off single and scored on a Case Collum triple. With one out, Zane Underwood bunted and Collum scored to give Alpha Omega the early 2-0 lead.
Alpha Omega continued their scoring in the top of the 2nd with the help of free passes. With one out, Isaac Thompson and Braylon Volker both got aboard after being hit by pitches. Brody Ward bunted and reached base on an error, loading the bases. Courtesy runner Blaise Bell scored on an error and later Volker scored on a passed ball. After a McCaffety walk Collum doubled home two more runs and Alpha Omega had a 6-0 lead.
Covenant Classical got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 2nd. Hudson Williams singled, stole 2nd, stole 3rd and then stole home on a double steal to make it 6-1. Alpha Omega got the run back in the top of the 3rd on Volker’s Sacrifice Fly, making it a 7-1 Alpha Omega lead.
The score remained 7-1 until the top of the 6th when Alpha Omega put together another 4-run inning. Collum singled with his 3rd hit of the game and 2 outs later scored on an error. Thompson tripled home 2 runs. Courtesy runner Bell scored on a passed ball to make it 11-1.
With a potential run-rule, starting pitcher Colton Sikes came back out on the mound. He struck out the side, giving Alpha Omega the win and their 2nd consecutive State Championship. Sikes gave up one run on one hit and 2 walks and struck out 12. He was named the THSB Championship Game MVP.
“It means so much to do it again, going out my senior year,” Sikes commented. “I’ve been playing with many of these guys for four years. I went out there and tried not to let the magnitude of the game affect my pitching. I wanted to just go out there and fill up the zone like I do every game. It felt like the whole arsenal worked really well. And shout out to Coach Casey Collum. He was amazing today.”
“To me, today’s win means that last year wasn’t a fluke,” Head Coach Collum stated. “I think we’ve shown that we have a system and a program that the guys bought into and they have been relentless. It’s a special group of guys and they are setting the standard and the tone for the kids coming behind them. Colton was phenomenal today. He’s the ultimate professional and puts the work in. I wanted him to have the opportunity to walk out their and finish the game with three strikeouts. And Case had a big day. He was 3-3 with a triple, double, single and walk. I’m super proud of him. He had a good tournament here.”
