INTERVIEW
How did baseball become your main sport?
I was 6 years old and I went to a Ranger/Red Sox game. I saw David Ortiz hit a home run and I knew I wanted to play baseball. So I would say from six years old, I knew I wanted to play baseball.
When did it hit you that you were a pretty good baseball player?
When I started playing summer ball, the competition I was playing against was actually good. The coaches started talking to me about scouts and I didn’t really know anything about it. So at 12 or 13, I started to see that baseball is where I really wanted to be.
Who is someone who has really influenced your baseball journey?
Gary Sheffield. I talk to him a lot. He gives me a lot of cues and a lot of pointers for the next level. What I need to do. How I need to be right now.
How has your transition to Grapevine been?
It’s been great. The teachers are great. Coach Webster is great. All the kids seem to love me. So it’s really great there. The teachers have been really flexible with my schedule. Like when I was in Japan, there was no problem with that. We got it all figured out. So it has been great moving.
What do you like about his year’s Grapevine team?
I feel like we’re gelling together really fast. I knew some of the kids previously so I knew coming together was something that could happen and we know that this could be something big.
What do you think it’s going to take for Grapevine to make a three-peat?
I would say grinding, working, and staying dedicated. And being focused. Not putting too much pressure on ourselves and just remaining focused at all time.
As a senior newcomer to this team, how do see your role?
I don’t really know yet because we haven’t talked to the coaches about my role, where I will be in the field or in the lineup. So I would say just be a great team player, communicating with my teammates and not worrying about where I will be or where I will playing. And just having fun at the end of the day.
Talk about your experience with USA Baseball.
USA was great. Went to Okinawa, Japan and won the gold medal. I got to know all my teammates and so it was really fun. USA Baseball was great.
Why Arkansas?
I had a great talk with Coach Thompson and Coach Van Horn before I took my official visit there. They gave me a great blueprint about Arkansas and who they were as a team and as a school. So I liked the school and the coaches’ blueprint before I even stepped on campus.
