Shiner vs New Deal

It finally got hot in central Texas but no one cared because we are getting to play baseball.  The 2A State Semi Finals start off with a great match up of New Deal (#1) versus Shiner (#5).  We can reverse those rankings and no one would argue.  What I mean by that, is these teams are both really good.  The battery for Shiner today was Ty Wunkenwerder on the mound and Cash Shows behind the plate.  While New Deal would put Harley Patterson on the bump with Noah Rodriquez receiving pitches for him.

New Deal would manage a single by Kyler Reed in the Top of the first but that was all as Shiner’s Ty Winkenwerder controlled the zone well.  Shiner would make things a little more exciting in the bottom half as Ryan Peterson and Drew Wenske both singled to lead off the bottom.  A double steal moved them to second and third.  Two ground outs and a strikeout later and no one would touch home.

New Deal would quickly load the bases from a walk, a hit by pitch and a single by Arric Mares.  An error would score Harley Patterson who led off with a walk.  A couple of singles later and it was quickly 5-0 New Deal.  Kyler Reed had 2 RBIs in the inning with Tanner Seeley and Colby Henderson also contributing to the RBI total.  Due to the error, all 5 runs were unearned.  Shiner would go down quietly thanks for a coupe of strikeouts and a groundout to Colby Henderson.

Harley Patterson ripped a ball to center to start out the 3rd but Shiner’s Christian Wagner made a nice play despite getting turned around.  A popout to second baseman Drew Wenske and there were 2 outs before Arric Mares rips a double to left.  A routine grounder to Connor Winkenwerder ends the top of the 3rd.  Shiner’s Ryan Peterson would fly out to centerfielder Izik Adams in the bottom of the 3rd for out number one.  Wenske would ground out to short.  Jared Shimek smoked a ball to left center for a standup double but a check swing back to the pitcher gets toss to Reed for the final out of the inning.

New Deal would have another big inning in the top of the fourth.  A leadoff single by Jordan Aubry; followed by a Tanner Seeley double started the scoring.  Colby Henderson added a single.  Kyler Reed added a double and Harley Paterson had a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.  Kyler Reed would come in to pitch the bottom of the 4th.  He would get a line out to short but then walk the next to batters.  He settled down and ended the inning with two strikeouts.  At the end of the 4th it was 9-0 New Deal.

Arric Mares gets his second double of the day to lead off the 5thand is moved up by pinch hitter Jonas Rodriguez.  Jordan Aubrey strikes out for the 2nd out. Tanner Seeley pops out to short to end the top of the 5th.  New Deal missed the opportunity to add the 10th run and set up the run rule.  Ryan Peterson reaches on an error to start off the bottom of the 5th.  A single and a fielder’s choice would get Shiner on the board but that is all they could muster.  At the end of 5 it was 9-1 New Deal.

A leadoff double by Colby Henderson would kick off the top of the 6th.  Kyler Reed would walk.  Noah Rodriguez would reach on a error.  Patterson would record the first out after 3 runs had scored.  Nicholas Carrasco would hit into a fielder’s choice but be safe at first.  Arric Mares would hit a deep fly to left that was misplayed by the left fielder and score two.  He was credited with an RBI.  Izik Adams hit a double to score Mares and force a pitching change.  Connor Winkenwerder would take the mound for Shiner.  Jordan Aubrey singles up the middle and moves Adams to 3rd.  But a 6-3-2-4-5 double play ends the inning.  Seeley was out at first and Adams was caught in a pickle.

Kyler Reed gets the first out in the 6th on a pop out then after a lengthy at bat, strikes out AJ Patek.  A fly out to left would end the game.

WP – Harley Paterson
LP –  Ty Winkenweder
