4A State Semifinal Game 1 – Sweeny Defeats Kilgore

Sweeny is the 1st team to advance to the 4A state championship where they hope to avenge last year’s championship loss to Argyle. Jackson Kiddy got the win on the mound as he held Kilgore in check after a bumpy 1st inning. Caden Homniok got the last out for the save.
Offensively, Sweeny checked in with 10 hits, but really had pressure on Kilgore every inning. Kilgore was able to avoid the big inning until the 5th when Sweeny pushed across 3. The stars were plentiful for Sweeny as several guys had big games: Joe Effenberger was 1-2 with a double and a BB; Homniok reached base 3 times as he wasn’t 2-3 with 2 singles, a BB, and 2 runs; Braden Norris and Cord Filipp had 2 hits apiece.
The big bat and MVP was Quinton Martin. Martin was 2-4 with a double, a single, and 3 RBI. His big double in the 5th broke the game open. Martin was asked if last year helped with this year’s run, “Yes sir. Last year we came out and we were a little flat. This year we were a lot more relaxed because we’ve been here.”
Sweeny started 9 seniors against Kilgore so that experience puts them one win away from a state title.
