INTERVIEW
You are from a baseball family. What are your earliest baseball memories?
My first time on the a baseball field was when I was 2 weeks old. My dad brought me out. So ever since I can remember, I’ve always been in love with the game. I was the bat boy for my dad’s team at a young age. I was always around the older guys. I loved the atmosphere of it all.
When did you realize that you were pretty good at baseball?
I started playing Little League and Select baseball. I played a few other sports but baseball was always the most fun for me. I was good at it and it was just what I enjoyed the most.
Who has been a big influence or inspiration or encourager in your baseball journey?
My parents. My dad has been my coach since I was little. We would hit in the backyard and then we’d go pitch. I pitched all the time. He was like my personal trainer. And my mom is my biggest motivator. She’s always encouraging me to go and work harder and she makes sure that I’m staying on the right track. They both have done a great job of encouraging me.
You guys finished 4th in district but made it to the Regional Finals. What clicked for you in the playoffs?
Well, it might just show how hard District 19-6A is. There are a lot of competitive teams in that district. We even had to win a play-in game to get into the playoffs. Once we got in the playoffs, we got hot. We beat Foster in the first round, then we swept a good Stratford team. We continued to be hot and swept Clear Lake. And then we had a good series against State Champion Kingwood but they just got the better of us.
What do you like about this year’s Katy Taylor team?
We’ve got a lot of seniors that were on varsity last year. We have a lot of returning starters. And we have a good group of guys who click together. We’re all friends. We hang out outside of baseball. We are comfortable around each other. We make each other better. We are at a place where we can pick someone up or we can call them out without any hard feelings. We have a good group of younger guys that I think look up to us. They want to absorb the mentality and culture at Taylor.
What will it take for you guys to make another long playoff run?
We have got to play to the best of our abilities. We can’t be selfish. We can’t give away at bats. We have to play one out at time, one pitch at a time and just live in the moment.
How do you see your role on this team?
I’m the number one guy on the mound. My goal is to throw seven strong innings and get us a win. I also can swing a little bit so just try and pick up RBIs, get on base and do what I can for the team. I think of myself as a pretty good leader. I try and point guys in the right direction. A lot of the youngers come to me about questions they have. Mechanical questions or tips, things like that. So I will just try and be there for everybody and try and pick everyone up.
What is your biggest challenge when you are out on the mound?
My biggest challenge is that sometimes I can get too amped up. I am a very emotional pitcher. Sometimes if I don’t make a good pitch or I take a bad swing, I can get in my head and get a little bit mad at the situation. I think that is part of my redheaded temper. So I have to remind myself, take a deep breath and think one pitch at a time. One play at a time.
Why UT?
That’s where my mom went. I’ve grown up a UT fan and when they called on August 1st I was like heck yeah, let’s do this thing. I went on a visit there in September and I just loved it. I loved the coaching staff, loved everything that Austin was about, and fell in love with the place.
It’s your senior year. What do you hope coaches, teammates and fans remember about Bryce Krenek?
That I’m a hard worker. I don’t want to be the guy that left something on the table or I wish I would have done this differently. Or I wish I had spent more time doing this. I would want to be remembered as someone who left it all on the field. I would also like to be remembered as a positive player who just worked his tail off.
