Zack Esquivel won the pitching duel between he and Cy Ranch’s Riley Gossett when Landon Etzel hit a sacrifice fly to score Michael Rohland in the bottom of the 7th to give Clear Creek a 1-0 win.
Esquivel pitched a complete game shut out, giving up only 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. Twice Cy Ranch had a runner on 3rd, including the top of the 7th, but Esquivel was able to get the out Clear Creek needed and strand the runners.
Gossett was tough on the mound as well. For 6 innings, he held Clear Creek to just 3 hits and no walks.
But in the bottom of the 7th, Clear Creek rallied. Michael Rohland led off the inning with a double. Satchel McElroy then laid down a bunt and beat it out for an infield single, moving Rohland over to 3rd. Etzel then hit a fly ball for an out but was deep enough to allow Rohland to score the winning run.
Laredo Alexander 10 San Antonio Johnson 7 – Region 4 Final (Game 1)
Alexander exploded for 7 runs in the bottom of the 1st and then held on for a 10-7 win in Game 1 of the Region 4 Final. The runs broke a 20 inning scoreless streak Johnson’s Ryan Dubbels had going.
Johnson led off the game with a run in the top of the 1st on a Santana Barrera single but Alexander had a big answer for that. Hot hitting Jerry Avila got aboard on a hit by pitch, moved over to 3rd, and scored on a Sergio Macias Sac Fly to tie the game. Then, with two outs, Alexander found the hot bats. Ramon Ballina hit a 2 RBI single, Aldo Buendia hit a bases loaded triple, and Avila, batting for the 2nd time in the inning, singled home the courtesy runner.
Alexander got two more runs in the bottom of the 2nd on an Alan Campero inside-the-park Home Run to take a 9-1 lead.
Johnson chipped away at the lead for the rest of the game scoring 3 runs in the 4th, a run in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th, but wasn’t able to catch up to the huge lead that Alexander built early.
Alan Campero was 3-4 in the game with 2 doubles and the inside-the-park HR. He scored 3 times and had 2 RBIs. Buendia was the winning pitcher but also had 3 RBIs on his bases loaded triple.
