Colleyville Heritage Runs Past Corsicana 2-1 to Advance to 5A State Championship Game

“He’s a playmaker. Whether he’s at bat, playing shortstop, on the bases, or on the mound, he makes things happen. That’s why he was drafted #2.”

That is Coach Alan McDougal talking about his player Bobby Witt Jr. Witt scored both of Colleyville Heritage’s runs and was a menace on the bases as the Panthers beat Corsicana 2-1 to advance to the 5A Championship game.

Witt singled in his first at bat and stole second. He took 3rd on a Jacob Guerrero groundout and then scored when the Corsicana shortstop couldn’t handle a Mason Greer ground ball, giving Colleyville a 1-0 lead.

Corsicana tied it in the top of the 2nd on a Cade Johnson RBI single that scored Ty Nolen.

But in the 3rd inning, Witt got on base again when he drew a base on balls. After several pickoff attempts, Corsicana pitcher Micah Burke threw over to first as Witt was breaking for 2nd. Witt went ¾ of the way to 2nd, put on the brakes, looked at the first baseman and then sprinted and dove in safely to 2B. Burke made another attempt to pick off Witt at second but the throw went into centerfield and Witt made it to 3B. Mason Greer hit a deep fly ball to LF and scored Witt from 3rd on a Sac Fly to give Colleyville Heritage the 2-1 lead.

Colleyville Heritage had another chance to break the game open when Witt was up with the bases loaded. But Corsicana sophomore pitcher Kolby Kinkade got Witt on a strikeout to end the threat.

From there, the Colleyville pitching staff held Corsicana scoreless. Starting pitcher Austin Glaze (14-0) went 4 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 run. Colby Kroutil came in and gave up no hits in 2 innings. Then Witt came in to close. After 2 strikeouts and a walk, he got a slow grounder to 1B to end the game and pick up the Save.

“When Bobby struck out with the bases loaded, I knew he would be that much better on the mound to close the game,” McDougal explained. “He’s that kind of competitor and that was obvious today.”

Colleyville moves to play the winner of the Georgetown/Sharyland Pioneer semifinal. The 5A Championship game will be at noon on Saturday.
