Lutheran South Shuts Down Second Baptist 6-0 in TAPPS Division 2 Semifinal Game

Even though they had beaten Houston Second Baptist twice, Lutheran Coach Aaron Schneider told his players to forget the past and take of the day.  Jr Wyatt Powell led the way as he held Second Baptist to 1 hit in 6 innings as Lutheran South won 6-0 to advance to the TAPPS Division 4 State Championship Game.

Lutheran South started things off in bottom of the first. Marcus Cantu led off with an infield single and Jaylen Walker tripled to the centerfield warning track to score Cantu.  The bases were loaded on a hit by pitch and a walk with no outs.  Second Baptist was able to get the next two outs but Brody Smith was hit by a pitch and Walker scored to give Lutheran South an early 2-0 lead.

Lutheran South picked up two more in the bottom of the 3rd.  Omar Serna was hit by a pitch and courtesy runner James Stoeckel went to 3rd on a Victor Coronado double.  Ryan Reed scored James on a Sacrifice Fly to Center Field.  With two outs Smith hit a ground ball and was called safe on a close play at first.  Coronado scored to give Lutheran South a 4-0 lead.

They picked up one more run in the bottom of the 4th.  Coronado got his second double of the game that scored Cantu.  Lutheran South picked up one more in the 5th on pinch hitter James’ double that scored Brycen Gilbert to extend the lead to 6-0.

While Lutheran South was scoring, Second Baptist was struggling to get baserunners.  Powell was perfect through 4 innings before giving up the only Second Baptist hit of the game in the 6th.  He pitched 6 innings of shutout ball, giving up just the one hit while striking out 5 and walking one.  Relief pitchers Will Simmons and David Corona came in to get the final outs of the 7th inning and give Lutheran South the win.

For his performance Wyatt Powell was named the THSB MVP of the Game.

“I went in with a lot of confidence today,” Powell stated.  “I trust the work I have put in and I trust my defense.  The offense took a lot of pressure off today knowing that if I gave up a run, it wouldn’t hurt us.  We have a really good team and we are all very excited.”

“We talked about how we have played them twice and it won’t be the same,” Head Coach Aaron Schneider explained. “The stakes are higher so we need to take care of today and forget past games.  Powell is a pitcher who never gets too high or too low.  You love that in a pitcher.  Today, he was locked in and ready for the moment.  This team has been focused this year.  It was our mission to get here and now we need to go finish it.”
