Sinton’s Blake Mitchell Named THSB Defensive Player of the Year
admin | Jul 27th, 2022Blake Mitchell, Jr C/RHP from Sinton, is the THSB Defensive Player of the Year.
Mitchell was not a friend to batters and baserunners whether he was behind the plate or on the mound. A premium catcher behind the plate, Mitchell is a great receiver, blocks well, has good feet and a strong arm. He regularly displays a pop time under 2.00 including a 1.86 pop time at a Perfect Game event. He exhibits strong leadership on the field. Both Perfect Game and Prep Baseball Report rank Mitchell as the top catcher in the nation among 2023 graduates.
On the mound, Mitchell was 6-0 with an 0.39 ERA and 67 Ks in 35 innings pitched. He was the winning pitcher in the State Semifinal game vs Celina throwing a complete game shutout, giving up only 3 hits with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Mitchell was also a force at the plate with a .465 batting average hitting 17 doubles, 5 triples, and 7 home runs with 52 RBIs and 49 runs scored. He led all 4A players with 52 RBIs.
Mitchell and the Sinton Pirates won the 4A State Championship and finished the season with a 36-1 record.
Mitchell was the named the 26-4A Junior Player of the Year and selected a 1st Catcher on the THSBCA 4A All-State Team. He was named Texas Gatorade Player of the Year earlier this season.
Mitchell has committed to play baseball at Louisiana State University.
