San Antonio Reagan exploded for 5 runs in the 2nd inning on both big hits and small ball and Cal Carver held Cy Ranch to just 1 run on 3 hits as Reagan advanced to the State Championship Game in a 5-1 win. Reagan will play Southlake Carroll on Saturday for the 6A State Championship.

Cy Ranch started the game off by scoring a run in the top of the 1st. Westley Shields walk and was sacrificed over by Scotty Scott. Colton Cowser then doubled in Schields to give Cy Ranch their only run. But after that first inning, Carver settled in giving up only 2 more hits in the final six innings.

“I just had a bad inning,” Carver explained. “Every game I have one bad inning and it just happened in the first inning this game.” Carver finished the game with only the one run and struck out five in the contest.

The offense helped Carver with a big cushion in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Josh Killeen started things off with a walk and Cal Martin followed up with a double. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and the infield in, Travis Sthele got a ground ball past the infield to score courtesy runner Jared Sherer. Dalton Brieger bunted and Cy Ranch starting pitcher Matt Thompson threw the ball trying to get the runner at home allowing Martin to score and giving Reagan a 2-1 lead.

Zane Raba singled through a drawn in infield scoring Sthele making it 3-1. A Morrow sacrifice RBI and a Porter Brown RBI single gave Reagan a 5-1 at the end of 2. From there Carver took over.

Reagan made it to the Championship Game last year only to lose to Deer Park. “This was a nice win,” Carver stated, “but we didn’t put in all this hard work just to get to the Championship Game. We want to go home with a gold medal around our neck.”
