Timely Hits Helps Deer Park Capture 6A State Championship

With timely hits, good defense, and tough pitchers, the Deer Park Deer found a way to win in the 6A State Championship Game over San Antonio Reagan 7-2. The Deer were outhit by Reagan 11-10 but found a way to score runs and keep Reagan from getting runs.

Winning Pitcher Clay Aguilar gave up 11 hits in 4.1 innings but only gave up 2 runs. He picked off a runner in the first inning and got double plays in the second and third to kill potential Reagan rallies.

Deer Park got on the board first in the top of the 2nd. Blake Martin led off the inning with a single and one out later Dylan Pullig walked. On a hit and run, Taylor Lee hit a hard ground ball down the 3rd Base line that went to the wall. Both Martin and Pullig scored giving Deer Park an early 2-0 lead.

Deer Park followed up with a run in the 3rd. Chase Keng opened the inning with a single and moved to 3rd on a Clay Aguilar single and a double steal. Martin got a Sac Fly to RF scoring Keng from 3rd increasing Deer Parks lead to 3-0.

Deer Park continued its run attack in the 4th, scoring 3 runs on an Austin Mitchell RBI single and a Keng 2 RBI double, giving Deer Park a 6-0 lead.

Reagan finally got on the board in the bottom of the 4th after Ramon Garza led off with a single and moved to 3rd on a Josh Killeen double. Aguilar then worked a strikeout. Seth Morrow grounded out to first scoring Garza. Aguilar then got a fly ball to get out of the inning with only one run.

Reagan made it 6-2 in the 5th with 3 successful singles including the RBI single from Cade Bormet. Then Deer Park brought Adrian Gonzalez, Friday night’s winning pitcher in relief.

Gonzales got out a groundout and a strikeout to stop the Reagan rally. He went on to retire the next 6 batters and finished the game with 4 Ks. For his performance he was named the Championship Game MVP.

Deer Park got an insurance run in the 7th when Aguilar doubled and scored on a Josiah Ortiz fly ball, increasing Deer Park’s lead to 7-2.
