Hallsville Riding 12 Game Shutout Streak

Posted on:

The Hallsville Bobcats are definitely on a roll.  They are currently in the midst of a 12 game streak in which they have not allowed a single run.  The Bobacts, led by Coach Scott Mitchell, have been stingy all year when it comes to opponents crossing the plate.  The team has 17 total shutouts and have outscored their opponents by a total of 90-0 during their current 12 games shutout streak and 185 – 20 over their 25 games this season.   To take that even deeper, the Bobcats outscored their district opponents 103-7, which included a 3-2 loss at the hands of District Runner Up, Sulphur Springs on March 27th.  That game also marked the last run allowed by Hallsville pitching.

A streak of this magnitude obviously requires repeated brilliant pitching performances; and Hallsville has had no shortage of magnificent outings from its pitching staff.  To say ‘magnificent’ may be a bit of an under billing when it comes to staff ace, Coby Weaver.  Weaver, a Dallas Baptist commit, has amassed 3 perfect games and a 3 no hitters this season alone.  To add to those gaudy stats, Weaver has fanned 124 batters this season, which currently tops that category in 5A.

The Bobcats are 22-3 on the season and will face Waxahachie in the Area Round beginning Thursday in Lindale, followed by games on Friday and Saturday (if necessary) at Mesquite’s Tillery Field.

“I’ve had a lot of great players that have called and texted me to tell me that they care,” Robertson said this afternoon. “That’s been nice.”

Robertson is in his eighth year as Plano’s coach. When he took over in 2008, Plano hadn’t made the playoffs in eight years. The Wildcats, who were 5A regional finalists last season, are 11-7 this year and 7-6 in District 6-6A. If the season ended today, they would be the district’s fourth seed in the playoffs.

Prior to his time at Plano, Robertson was the head coach at South Garland for 18 years. He led the Colonels to 10 playoff appearances.

He joked that with 500 wins, “you know you’re getting old.” He also said he’s proud of this year’s team, which has battled through a really tough district without one if its top players, Cody Farhat, who is just now returning from an ACL injury suffered during the football season.

“It’s been a dogfight,” Robertson said. “But these guys have hung together and kept us in it.”

Resilient Keller Indians on 13 Game Winning Streak

Posted on:

The Keller Indians have quietly dominated 5-6A, already clinching the District Championship with 3 games still to be played. Keller is 11-0 in District and 15-2-1 overall with a 13 game winning streak. Only nationally ranked teams San Antonio O’Connor and Dallas Jesuit have longer winning streaks in 6A this year.

Keller is led by a group of 7 seniors. SS Luke Wakamatsu is the leading hitter, CF Peyton Grassonvits leads the team in home runs and 2B Zane Wilkinson has two walk off singles to win a game. Pitchers Gabe Martinez and Lane Rice have developed into Keller’s top 2 pitchers, giving up only 2 runs in the last 4 games. And Jrs Shea Langeliers, Brad Gneiting, Hunter Seay and Fr Kyle Rich fill out a rounded team.

Coach Rob Stramp explains this group of players. “They are a resilient group of players. In fact, being resilient is part of their mission statement. They are a tight-nit group and enjoy being around each other. They know that being resilient is an important part of the game so when they get behind or get off to a slow start they just get determined to get it done or figure out how to get it done.”

Keller has come from behind on several occasions and seem to find a way to win. And it’s not just one guy who steps up, but a number of guys have stepped up at different times. Starting pitchers, relievers, top of the lineup, bottom of the lineup…someone contributes each game.

Keller has been quietly winning games this year. But an 11-0 district record and 13 game winning streak is bringing attention to the Keller Indian baseball team. Keller is currently ranked #16 in the THSB 6A State Poll and they have received votes in the THSBCA Top 10 poll.

San Antonio Southwest Coach John Velasquez gets 300th Win

Posted on:

Southwest’s 3-1 win over #13 Corpus Christ Carroll was a huge win. Carroll, who made 3 trips to the State Tournament from 2010-12, is a traditional powerhouse and a win over them not only builds a team’s confidence but also helps you in the race to be one of the 4 teams to play post-season.

But the game also had special meaning as it was Head Coach John Velasquez’s 300th win as a Head Baseball Coach. Coaches often spend effort and time promoting their players and helping them develop and grow as baseball players and as young men. THSB wants to recognize Coaches when they hit significant milestones in their careers to honor them for their work, effort and influence in the lives of young men.

Congratulations to Southwest Head Baseball Coach John Velasquez on his 300th career win as a Head Baseball Coach!
